Don't have time to read the whole thread. But the question is not how to be different. If DC is not different, don't try to curate a "different" persona. You can't!

I didn't read this whole thread, but get a job at a service station, work on cars, understand an industry from the ground up

These are definitely hot ECs

Same ECs with mild variations

The above post encapsulates the absurdity of the college admissions process today. Take a step back, read it, and you realize it’s literally a clown show.
As someone once said (in a comedy of course) “all the men and women are merely players.” And it’s all kind of degrading.

Sadly so. Forget about the most precious childhood.

For boys, be a star football/basketball player/captain for your large public high school. Need not be recruitable but important to be All-City/Region/State. For girls, be a star cheerleader/captain or the homecoming queen. Be athletic and popular while sporting a 4.5 1500+ with 10+ APs including all STEM ones and getting all 5s. Need not have non-profits and research pubs. Few STEM hopefuls have such profiles. Likely good enough for t20.

Kid wanted aerospace engine so decided to learn to fly. Got his license and flew himself to Virginia Tech. That seemed to impress admissions.

+1. Sadly my DC thought getting one would be useful. Two summers. Got into HYPSM. Nope, internships not what led to admission. Not even mentioned in admissions file. Worst thing? Younger kids and parents looking up LinkedIn profile and deciding what got DC in. So when I met one of them, the question was how can my kid get an internship? I asked why? To get into MIT! Rather than ask what I think (or know!) got my Dc into MIT, these people try to be clever.

PSA: talk to kids (or their parents) from your school who were admitted to the school you want to attend and ask them if they know what made a difference. Most people will talk your ear off! Just ask. 😊

Nothing says I’m a unique individual better than having some tattoos, a few piercings, and a weird haircut.
