Agree with both PP. My 5th grader usually just plays games or does critical thinking activities in his level 3 but I keep him in it because some classroom teachers use the time to remediate the rest of the class when the level 3 students are pulled-out. My son does not need remediation and he would become a behavior problem.

Agree with PP...depending on the school, LL3 and other enrichment levels are being accomodated by "flexible grouping." It doesn't equate to much anymore. In some classes, it just means the AART comes in once a week and alters an assignment.

My understanding is that Level 3 doesn't amount to much--roughly an hour a week of enrichment in a given subject. Is that correct? If so, probably not worth getting too worked up about?

I don't see how it would hurt. My son was a behavior problem in 2nd grade and his teacher did not care for him. He was a behavior problem because he was so bored and he was all boy. She did not recommend him for center or level 3. When he entered 3rd grade his teacher told us many times he needed to be at center and all his behavior problems were coming from not being challenged and because he was bored. We chose not to pursue center because he had ADD and high-anxiety but we did agree to him being placed in level 3 which has turned out to be the best decision. He is also in compacted math and just took the 6th grade math SOL in 5th grade so he was finally being challenged. I would definitely go talk to the AART teacher even if you just get the process down and maybe your letter just hasn't come yet....

To be clear, the process for Level 3 services can be initiated by the parent or teacher. But, the process is initiated in the later part of second grade.

I agree - it is probably like all the other things - very dependent on the individual schools. If your child is already flagged by the aart for pull-outs then you probably didn't need to do much. But if your child had never been in any pull-outs and you wanted level III you probably needed to talk to them about it so they would consider it.

My friend was told by the AART that level III is referred by the classroom teacher and through students who are already in pull-out for 1st and/or 2nd grade. Our daughter has been in pull-out since 1st grade and our school told us she would be in level 3 next year. We did not initiate level 3 for her or our son when he was in 2nd grade. It just happened.

No level III letter here either for either of my kids and my son has been in it for 3 years. Not sure where you are at but I remember my son's usually comes the last week of school.

You have to initiate the application for LL3 services.
As a pp stated, ONLY those found Eligble for LL4 center placement, who turn it down AND who's base school does not offer LL4, are automatically given level 3 services.
If your child is found ineligible for aap in the first go around, you must apply for LL3 services to be considered, even if you plan to appeal.

June 10th was the deadline for local screening committees at schools to determine candidates for 2011-2012 elementary part-time school-based services. That must be why you received you level III letter.
