My daughter’s interview was on zoom and the interviewer spent a lot of time gossiping about their respective boarding schools which are rivals. It didn’t seem much like an interview at all. My daughter was deferred then waitlisted.

Tell me a bit about yourself.
What do you do outside of school?
And somehow the conversation revolved around international relations. My first gen student was a CS major and unable to talk too much about IR. Was waitlisted.

Did not ask why Princeton.

Yes. Princeton tries to interview everyone. My kid applied Regular decision and was interviewed. Enjoyed it, went really well. Was waitlisted.

This is a way to keep alumni engaged, unless there is a huge red flag, it holds little to no value. Just be relaxed, interesting and interested and have a good time.

I’ve done them (as interviewer). Be prepared to talk about yourself. Interviewer is given no info beyond your home address and HS (possibly whether you’re applying for a BSE or an AB but I can’t remember.) Keep in mind the interviewer is not a pro, just an alum, so keep it light. Have some questions for them about their experience in case the conversation runs dry. People always like to talk about themselves.

The interview doesn’t count for much. I think occasionally it adds insight if there’s an interesting dimension to the student that the student didn’t mention on their application, which the interviewer can talk about. But I don’t think this is common.
