This was me too - parenting back then was called benign neglect: you leave them alone and they'll be fine

I read it when I was about 12, I think. My mom was the one who suggested it, which looking back is totally crazy! Years later it came up and she couldn’t believe she’d let me read it then. I think she had forgotten about the incest (not sure how). I also read some pretty racy fan fiction online as a young teen (early 00s). My mom had no clue.

I read VC Andrews, Judith Krantz and a lot of other smut in middle school. Frankly, I’d be happy if my kids read these books. At least they’d be reading something!

No! My mom wouldn’t let me read Harlequins in high school. SHE read Flowers in the Attic as an adult, when it was first released, based on her sister’s recommendation, and I think she’s still traumatized. If she wouldn’t let me read her historical romances, there was absolutely no way V.C. Andrews would have been an option.

Yep, but those PSAs were less so in 90s. By then the helicopters started.

Yes, I read all of these and more. I LOVED reading and had older sisters so this stuff was laying around. I’m not sure I bothered to hide the books, either, and agree with PP that I had parents who were loving and caring without helicoptering to the point of reading what I was reading. My oldest daughter is 12, and reads all the time. It made me think of everything I was reading at her age…including allllll the V.C. Andrews books.
