I’m disgusted by the level of grift. Who is the auditor of USAID?

This is Trumps' way. Shock and Awe. Any good benefits are lost in translation.

Putting USAID under state has been thrown around by lots of administrations. Congress has always wanted to keep it separate so they can have more budget oversight. There are pros and cons. Moving USAID under State is not the worst idea. The problem is the way it is being done.

Someone will eventually recreate it but the mindset of this administration is that diplomacy is for the weak. You don't need to feed the poor when you can use AI to determine who is a threat. Keep that in mind for when there is hunger here in America - they expect the weak to die off.

What will happen to all of those on administrative leave?

At least until Democrat reverses the Trump EO

It will depend on Congress.

No, in four years these programs will be restarted, and the new president seen as a savior. Until then, buckle down and survive. It’s tough out there.

To clarify since there appears to be some confusion: this is not a general thread about venting about USAID being shut down, but rather a specific question about the legality of Trump's shut down, and the long term feasibility of the removal being permanent.

It seems hard to fathom that an entire foreign policy wing of the U.S. government could just vanish overnight. As the days pass it seems more and more surreal and strange. Is it really possible that this is the end of USAID, at least for the foreseeable future? Or another quick stunt that will go away in a couple of months?
