GMAFB. Plenty of people have first hand knowledge, including me, and it was gross and nothing like the previous time I had gone (15 years ago). People laying all over the place, shooting up (including one we saw in their foot), eating out of the trash, completely out of it. You cannot leave ANYTHING in the car, in any neighborhood. Trash everywhere. This isn't a Fox News conspiracy. It's just the sad state of affairs there now.

I went last year for work. It was gross-tons of homeless, urine, etc. Luckily my colleague drove me everywhere and told me several times that she can't keep anything in her car because it will be broken into. No car seat for her toddler, no empty bags for groceries, nothing.

I was just in SF and it was a beautiful trip. I was in downtown close to the Tenderloin and it was fine, I felt perfectly safe (I avoided the actual Tenderloin though). I think Fox News says the same things about DC too.

We went early October last year and had great weather and a wonderful trip. You will get chillier, fall-type weather in SF or on the coast if you venture that far, but will get more summery weather in East Bay and south on the Peninsula, if you choose to spend time those places. Late September is great for hiking in that area, so I'd highly recommend trying to get out of the city for that if you enjoy the outdoors.

Some neighborhoods are worse than others for homelessness and those issues. Do your homework and don't be surprised if you go wandering through the Tenderloin and discover there are lots of homeless folks there -- it's been like that for decades, it's not new.

I definitely see more homeless encampments in DC then SF when I was there a year ago in September. I can’t imagine it’s changed drastically since then.

I live in SF and would say avoid September and October. We're more likely to get extreme heat those days (over 95) and a lot of places don't have AC.

Watch where you walk, and yes avoid Civic Center/Tenderloin for homeless. Avoid Union Square for theft. Avoid leaving ANYTHING in a rented car for broken windows.

Every person on that thread who went said "it was great, we had a wonderful time. Just avoid the Tenderloin area". Always good advice even pre-covid, honestly.

September is the best month, weather-wise.
