San Francisco for summer vacation?

Anonymous
I’ve been to San Francisco before but not since 2020. Would you go there on vacation now? My understanding is the city has changed significantly since the pandemic and many stores/venues/restaurants have since closed.

lol NO.

We went to San Francisco last summer and had a great time - behind the scenes tour at Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Chinatown food walking tour, rode a cable car. We stayed in Fisherman’s Wharf and never felt unsafe.

That said, however, I believe conditions in the city have deteriorated since then, and I would probably not go to San Francisco now.

And that’s a shame.

I’ve heard that robberies and car jackings are on the rise, even in broad daylight. I would not feel comfortable taking my family there.

Blah blah blah Mark Twain blah blah.

Make sure you pack pants and a jacket.

Vacation to San Francisco now? No way, not a chance.

San Francisco is fine. Like any major city, there are parts to avoid. Couple of recent threads on SF on tripadvisor which mirror my experience there last month

It has deteriorated that much—you “believe”—from “never felt unsafe,” in one year?

I live in SF, and haven’t worn a jacket here in over a decade.

I was there 2 weeks ago with my 11 and 14 YOs. we had a blast and never felt unsafe. we went to Alcatraz, rode across the Golden Gate Bridge, went to a baseball game, rode cable cars, ate great food, walked along Fisherman’s Wharf, etc. it was definitely cold though!

the trick is to stay in the residential parts of the city - get an air BnB in Cow Hollow, Marina, Pac Heights, Russian Hill, something like that, or stay in a hotel near Fisherman’s Wharf, NOT at the big chain hotels near Union Sq/Market St/Mission St. Avoid that area - ferry building is OK but otherwise avoid. The Tenderloin has spread into Union Sq and the financial district and it’s pretty gross. but tourists can easily avoid those areas. Over where we were (Cow Hollow/Marina) was quieter than when I lived there 20 years ago, but still plenty of great restaurants and felt safe to walk around pretty much any time I wanted to be out with my kids.

Absolutely. I was there recently with my kids age 4-11, and we had so much fun. We pretty much walked everywhere and never felt unsafe. It’s definitely dirtier in many parts than it used to be, but I did not feel remotely unsafe walking around. I think it’s a great vacation spot with kids. Spend a few days in the city, then I would drive out to Monterrey/Big Sur area.

This is true if most cities incl Chicago, Miami, NYC. Even parts of DMV. It's the times. So stay home if you can't deal with 2023.

In the context of safety and beauty - it is what it is. Still wonderful but more random stuff that sucks is likely to happen. It's like this everywhere there's people.

Yes the touristy sections are still beautiful and fine. Don’t let the TV news hype- and this board- scare you.

They say the same thing about DC.
