Charity brokers are such a scammy model. You give money to a celebrity middleman who then takes the money then decides to cut a new, larger check for the charity of their choice. After, of course, taking some off the top for administration, marketing, and whatever else. I think the LC and TR had full time people on staff. Jen and Glennon could then back in the glow of being altruistic givers for Instagram photo ops. “So thrilled that the Legacy Collective is now partying with Help A Momma America with $10,000”. Rinse and repeat. Why not ask your followers to give directly to recommended charity?
Thanks PP, for explaining this. Was this a trendy fundraising type thing to do circa 2008? Asking because in my dcumlandia suburb I can think of a group of college friends who formed a charity, got together and threw themselves fancy “benefit parties” at a country club with monies earmarked for some inner city program. Another began a charity in honor of a family member who died tragically and there was a flurry of 5ks, golf tournaments and even online sales. In both cases, the charities disbanded after a few years.
Exactly this. They were set up for social climber types to amplify their “brands” in the non-profit space and look like super giving heroes. Of course there a ton of waste and unnecessary tax write offs. They can be easily mismanaged to become little cash cows. Parties, trips, gifts, meals.
