I think the thing with Yorktown is that every single year they usually have two to three really strong players who get a lot of accolades and recognition. But somehow the rest of the team really steps up by the end of the season. Oakton beat Yorktown in the regional finals but then the following week Yorktown came back to beat them in the state championship. So, losing games can be an advantage if it fuels a fire to win in the end. I think any player/coach would rather have a few losses that led to a state championship over having an undefeated season but losing in the championship game.
Both those teams have such great team culture and grit. My kiddo's HS team is in Yorktown's division, so we play them at least once a year. They're beatable for sure (isn't any team, really?), but what sets them apart is how they find a way to recover after a setbacks--whether its being down by a goal or after a major defeat. I chalk that up to coaching, not just the players' talent. Of which Oakton and Yorktown have in abundance. But I think the coaching at those programs really sets them apart.
