“The kids” are her fans. They literally call her Mother. She chose them over him for a long time, sneaking around and covering it all up with soy-milk Joe for the sake of her good image. And singing in code about him so that only he and a few others got it. So Matty walked away. Can you blame him?

And that's why she is now releasing this album into the world, and everyone is finally making the connection between him and so many of her songs from the past. She is showing him that she is done caring about their images and just wants to be together, even if it means burning her life down. 
It remains to be seen if Taylor is too late and this is all in vain. My money is on their story not being finished.

I think she does. Why release these songs now? Why tell the world about these clandestine hookups, her longing for him and the dozens upon dozens of songs she wrote for him? Why risk damaging her image now that she has moved on and it is over? Her crazier fans are still doing their "no longer a Swiftie","Ratty Healy" stupidity as we speak. So to end would Taylor Swift bring that upon herself and look like a fool to her current boyfriend and to at least some of the general public if there was no chance of her ever getting back with Matty Healy? This is a man she has been in love with for at least a decade, all of her adult life so far. You don't recover from that in one summer while on a grueling touring schedule, especially when it wasn't you who chose to break it off.
