That was my first impression. My second impression was, ok, interesting lyrics. A week later and I am obsessed with some of the songs! Give it another listen. I particularly love But Daddy I Love Him - lyrics and the country vibe are awesome. Down Bad, TTPD, Fortnight, Guilty As Sin also good.
NP - my trajectory was similar. I was meh at first but it grew on me after a few listens. Not everything, I think there are too many songs altogether, but now I'm really into a lot of it. I love the bolded, plus Peter and some others.

He also mocks her/her fans when he sings, “Well I take care of my kids, she said.”
“The kids” are her fans. They literally call her Mother. She chose them over him for a long time, sneaking around and covering it all up with soy-milk Joe for the sake of her good image. And singing in code about him so that only he and a few others got it. So Matty walked away. Can you blame him?
And now she wants him back. She wasn’t kidding with “teenage petulance.”

And that's why she is now releasing this album into the world, and everyone is finally making the connection between him and so many of her songs from the past. She is showing him that she is done caring about their images and just wants to be together, even if it means burning her life down.
It remains to be seen if Taylor is too late and this is all in vain. My money is on their story not being finished.
She doesn’t want him back.

She sounds like someone who was strung along for a really long time. Add to that her rise to ridiculous levels of fame, and yet he remained unattainable. It sounds like a mind F to me.
I think it is precisely because of her ridiculous level of fame that he walked out. Matty Healy strikes me as very genuine, some may say to a faultand doesn't want a part of the PR machine bs. He probably gave her an ultimatum to stop trying to clean his image and change his story in order for them to be together, she chose fame and to "sparkle", and now she has regrets, misses him and wants him back. If you listen to his song Part Of The Band, he says something like She was part of the air-force, and I was just part of the band.
And then there is her song Bejeweled, which I believe is also about him: And when the band (his 1975 bandmates) asks do you have a man, I can still say I don't remember.

Matty Healy wasn’t short. She has been in love with him for years. Before, during and after Joe. Just listen to the lyrics in End Game, Illicit Affairs, Cardigan or Question, to name a few.
How are people still not getting this?
They actually dated for a few weeks…
Taylor and Matty probably started talking again when Jack worked with the 1975 in 2022. She appeared on stage with the 1975 in early 2023. Joe probably accused her of cheating (“guilty as sin”) and she likely wanted Joe to make a big gesture for her to stay (“you’re losing me”). She puts “invisible string” on the era setlist to prove her commitment, but they break up and she changes it to a Matty song.
She was at his show, then he came to a bunch of hers then they imploded. Like they were probably actually physically together maybe a week or two all together.
