[twitter]https://x.com/newyorker/status/1863439149279101434?s=46&t=kf1qYlCXQnKgUhJWEIu2vg[/twitter]
Some highlights of the article for those who don't want to read it are below. The sources are from multiple former colleagues from several organizations he ran and paint a picture of someone who: had a big alcohol problem and was frequently intoxicated and out of control, fraternized inappropriately with female staff, created a hostile workplace for female employees, and couldn't keep it in his pants when on the road and away from his family. He was forced to step down from the two nonprofits he ran--what makes anyone think he's going to be a better manager of the entire DoD with its multi-billion dollar budget and over 3 million employees (active military and civilian)? *forced to step down by both of the two nonprofit advocacy groups that he ran—Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America—in the face of serious allegations of financial mismanagement, sexual impropriety, and personal misconduct. *repeatedly intoxicated while acting in his official capacity—to the point of needing to be carried out of the organization’s events. *Hegseth took the C.V.A. team to the strip club, where “he was so drunk he tried to get on the stage and dance with the strippers.” *under Hegseth’s leadership, the organization became a hostile workplace that ignored serious accusations of impropriety, including an allegation made by a female employee that another employee on Hegseth’s staff had attempted to sexually assault her at the Louisiana strip club. *Hegseth was at a bar in the early-morning hours of May 29, 2015, while on an official tour through Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, drunkenly chanting “Kill All Muslims! Kill All Muslims!” *Hegseth had “a history of alcohol abuse” and had “treated the organization funds like they were a personal expense account—for partying, drinking, and using CVA events as little more than opportunities to ‘hook up’ with women on the road.”
Just highlighting this post outlining the allegations in the Mayer article because it appears many of you still haven't read it. He was fired from TWO jobs running veterans charities because he's a drunk and a womanizer who spends more time ranking the attractiveness of low-level female staffers and covering up sexual assault than actually doing his job. And he mishandled funds at these orgs because he thought the budget was just petty cash for trips to bars and strip clubs. And he's been nominated to run an organization with nearly 3 million employees and an annual budget of over 800 billion. One of the most disqualifying things about Pete Hegseth is that he knew all of the above and didn't mention it to anyone when he was asked to becoming Secretary of Defense. Like this is a guy who should be vetting himself and instead he thought, uh, the copious amounts of negative backstory on him was not going to get found out? In addition to being a drunk and a womanizer who is bad with money and has poor management skills, he's also stupid.
