Neither of them could have “subbed in” at any time. They had their own spots. Had she withdrawn before any competition started in Toyko, the replacement would have come from the 4 replacement athletes (which quickly became 2 with Covid protocols).[/quote]

This.  The athletes most capable of replacing Biles on vault and floor weren’t even options anyway, and the options to replace her on bars and beam weren’t great either.  I’m not sure the team lineup would have looked that much different had Biles withdrawn earlier- Lee or one of the alternates would have competed on vault.

This team was heavily dependent on Biles and Lee performing to their potential.  [/quote]
