I remember when I first moved to Virginia. During one visit to the DMV I registered my car in Virginia, got a Virginia license and registered to vote. I spent a fair bit of money that day - it was worth it to me because becoming a Virginia driver allowed me to work among other things. But not everybody makes the same calculation. Requiring a passport instead of a driver's license just makes it that much worse of a poll tax.[/quote] I just paid 180$ to get my passport. I had to do an appoointment at the post office weeks in advance, slots were only during work hours and had to take time off, plus getting the appropriate pictures and then they wanted to see some additional documentation on proof of residence and I had to run home and get that. I'm upper middle income. Passports are a pain in the neck even for me. [/quote]
