Don't you like to go to a nice dinner with your spouse? Enjoy a nice bottle of wine.... Go to get a massage, get your hair done. These things are nice. What I love doing is spending money on my house, my house is my haven, I love how it looks. I'm home a lot so I want to think my home is beautiful.
Sure, those things are all nice. But they don't make you or anyone happy. I get as more pleasure from cheap takeout pizza shared with family... giving and receiving massages with DH... hiking in the woods (more beautiful than your home, no matter how you decorate)... There is a reason why salary increases over $75k only bring about marginal increases in happiness. Because once you can afford food, healthcare and a safe home, there isn't much more money can do for you. If I can be happy spending less money, why wouldn't I? That was I can save my money for an emergency and share with others.
