The stats from 2010 (4 years ago): Math 8th Grade Applicants Percent Admitted Percent Algebra 1 1856 56.2% 65 13.5% Geometry 1345 40.7% 346 72.1% > Geometry 103 3.1% 69 14.4% Total 3304** 480 100.00% Above shows 65/1,856 (3.5%) were admitted for Algebra I applicants, 346/1345 (25.7%) were accepted for Geometry applicants and and 69/103 (69%) were accepted for higher than Geometry applicants. It is more skewed towards applicants with >Geometry now compared to 2010.
Thank you for the correct interpretation of data and concise summarization. Does anyone know if further breakdown of ">Geometry" is available that shows the acceptance rates for applicants w/ Algebra II, PreCalc, or Calc?
It is still oddly, a crap shoot. There are a few kids taking > greater than Algebra II who do not get in.
With a child taking math greater than Algebra II who doesn't get accepted, I would say it is not a crap shoot situation so much as one where the child's record may have some indication that TJ may not be a good fit for that child. I realize that a lot of people feel that reading comprehension and writing ability should have nothing to with TJ admissions, but the fact is that a child who is not very strong in those areas will have a very difficult time dealing with the curriculum at TJ. TJ has high standards in their math, science, and technology classes and equally high standards in their English and social studies classes. High math ability is necessary to do well at TJ, but it is not enough. Kids at TJ are expected to meet challenging standards in all their classes, in every subject area.
