I am 47 and was carded yesterday when I bought a bottle of wine.  I had my 9 yo with me.

I own a bar and our policy is to card literally everyone.  The reason is that I don't want my bartenders and servers guessing peoples' ages (and God forbid, overestimating someone's age), but I also don't want people to be offended.  I had a customer several years ago accuse us of racism because we carded her (she looked very young - like barely out of high school) and not her much older looking friends.  Turns out the woman was in her 30s.  But it was a reminder that selectively carding could be perceived as based on race or appearance.  I don't want anyone to feel that way.
 
So whether the customer looks 20 or 60, we card all of our patrons before serving them alcohol.  [/quote]
