OMG, is this post for real? I am a NP and we are considering moving to the Chesterbrook / Sherman / Haycock area from Alexandria City (our public elementary sucks), so I clicked on this link. I cannot believe all the craziness on this thread about elementary school. Seriously? Haycock separates out the gifted kids from all the regular kids and they don't even have any extracurricular classes together like art or music? WTH? Is it like this is all of Fairfax County? Not to be naive, but this is all new to us, and I cannot believe some of the things I am reading about public elementary schools. The folks on the private school board are more respectful of each other. Do the distinctions about whether your kid was in Haycock GT or Chesterbrook GT really matter at age 8? Seriously, people, just realize how lucky you are to live in good school districts. Our property taxes just went up by $50k this year in alexandria, city, and our publics suck!
You couldn't tell from DCUM, but that's how most people in Fairfax feel as well. Don't live in the Haycock district, but drive by in the morning some times on the way to Metro. Apart from the fact that the kiss-and-drop backs up traffic on Westmoreland, it's a nice place to drive by. Lots of diversity, lots of parents walking happy-looking kids to school in the AM, often with younger brothers and sisters in tow. Chesterbrook and Sherman aren't as crowded, but have a very nice vibe as well.
