I don't agree with Meren on a lot of levels. However, she was correct in this complaint about cutting crossing guards. However, she would do better if she lobbied her own Board and Superintendent for better choices: I do realize we need people in the central office. However, the pay for some of these people is exorbitant and some of the jobs are pretty fuzzy. ... Cut out International Baccalaureate. That would be several million dollars more. ... Move ahead quickly with AAP in all middle schools....
Meren is a master on bloat and inefficiency. Her mess that survived Thru/Brac includes Flint Hill Island/Oakton ES and the Madison/Langley/Marshall feeds in that area. Yes we are paying to bus Oakton ES that live near Hughes/Sunrise Valley to Jackson for AAP. How much does Meren's bus ratmaze cost to ship any students who had ES AAP at Sunrise Valley to Jackson for MS? That FX budget line item on crossing guards is 842k [less than 1 million]. https://wjla.com/news/local/fairfax-county-budget-deficit-crossing-guards-high-school-safety-cost-school-board-fcpd-elementary-middle-neighboring-jurisdiction-bust-cross-walks-adults-protection-approval-parents-students There are 2 elementary school magnets and the total transportation cost for that on the FY2026 program budget was 645k Meren's Hunters Woods has 263 students with transportation transferring in. Baileys had 12 but 155 immersion. Baileys upper had <10 and 129 immersion. Are we sticking them on the magnet bus? So for maximum 21 or 22 kids out on total for all Baileys. I guess Meren is getting at least 500k on buses alone for Hunters Woods magnet. Staff costs 1.3m for the 2 magnets. Baileys no longer functions as a magnet so it's just lingering added staff for just one of many needy sites. All that money would pay for crossing guards and some title 1 school's field trips.
