However, even though it’s a sad statistic, it’s important to understand that in the US about 2/3 of crop production goes to feeding livestock. Given that on average, a farm animal eats about 8 times as many calories as it produces, we can guess that about 8 times as many acres of crops are needed to feed it, compared to the number of acres it would take to feed the human who decides to eat plants instead. Switching from animals to plants as food sources saves both farm animals and wild animals killed when growing crops.[/quote]
