I have a work conference that schedules me to get home Monday the 24th. I admit I am getting nervous about that because the trip is to Denver so it’s not like it’s a short drive home if flights get delayed and we have to try to rent a car or something.
Your potentially catastrophic mistake is assuming there will even be rental cars available. We were stranded at an airport once to severe storms that were going to take 2+ days to resolve in terms of flights. There was a mass push to rent cars and get train tickets. Those both out immediately. People don't get it. If you fly somewhere now, you are risking being stranded indefinitely. You can't assume train tickets and rental cars will be available once there are huge and massive delays, because millions of people will be trying for it all at once. You'll have to go out and buy a brand new car at this rate.
Just don’t go then.
How well will that sit over with millions of Americans? People will be missing weddings, funerals, or even cancer or other treatments at special clinics. People will lose thousands of dollars on vacations they booked months ago and now cannot reach. It is not so easy as saying "just don't go".
