Your potentially catastrophic mistake is assuming there will even be rental cars available. We were stranded at an airport once to severe storms that were going to take 2+ days to resolve in terms of flights. There was a mass push to rent cars and get train tickets. Those both out immediately.
People don't get it. If you fly somewhere now, you are risking being stranded indefinitely. You can't assume train tickets and rental cars will be available once there are huge and massive delays, because millions of people will be trying for it all at once. You'll have to go out and buy a brand new car at this rate.
Just don’t go then.
How well will that sit over with millions of Americans? People will be missing weddings, funerals, or even cancer or other treatments at special clinics. People will lose thousands of dollars on vacations they booked months ago and now cannot reach.
It is not so easy as saying "just don't go".

Very dramatic! I’m on a work trip right now. I packed some extra stuff just in case. This isn’t 9/11 when airports were closed for days. 90% of flights will still be on.
Famous last words. The 10% cut starting tomorrow is just the beginning. You honestly think you'll be able to continue hassle free if this problem keeps getting worse and 10% canceled flights turns into 20 ,30, or 40% cancelations soon? Ha, have fun trying to rent a car when that happens, and be prepared to sleep in an airport for a week and half because all Airbnb and hotels get booked for outrageous prices as millions scramble to find lodging due to being stranded.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Just got back from Europe and everything was fine! All flights on time, no lines at Customs or security. I was pleasantly surprised! Good luck!
Do you know how frustrating it is to hear that everyone- like you- is all ITS JUST FINE. People are working without pay. Consumers should be striking but goodness knows Americans cant be uncomfortable for two seconds.
