I attended a VT event. They said they studied outcomes of students submitting test scores vs. those that didn't with the same GPAs. They found not statistically significant difference between outcomes (college grades, time to graduation) between the 2 groups. I haven't personally seen a study, but as a data nerd, I paid attention to the comment & the details.
This probably depends on the academic rigor of the college, for example VT versus MIT/Caltech/HYP. At the very top, standardized tests likely do make a difference to distinguish inflated 4.0 GPAs from an easy high school versus 4.0 GPAs from kids who can actually handle difficult coursework. Also, its a lot harder to bluff your way through a STEM major without having a solid foundation that is doubly verified by both GPA and standardized testing.
