At our private, HYP are always hooked admits - including URM and FG. In contrast, Stanford often doesn’t admit those kids and picks a high test score contrarian applicant - a doer, entrepreneur or activist. No Olympiad etc - non DC private
It does seem like Stanford is more lenient on gpa if has a high score and entrepreneurship. Have seen quite a few HYP rejects having their happy moments when Stanford releases decisions on the next day.
HYP are all about the hooks. It’s a pointless application for the vast majority of smart and accomplished kids. Stanford takes a broader approach. It’s accessible for brilliant and interesting students from the middle of nowhere. Whereas HYP is closed to those students. Basically, HYP are country club schools now plus FGLI, DEI, and “athletes.” Stanford is more accessible for students who don’t fit in those boxes.
