Many of my MAGA relatives were very unhappy about REAL ID and decided to step down to regular ID because they rarely fly. Didn't want to get all the paperwork.
What paperwork? I took my original birth certificate and al utility bill addressed to me at my home address when I renewed my driver's license. Zero problem.
So you had: - an unexpired driver's license (shows your identity, first proof of residence) - original birth certificate (certified, embossed, etc) shows citizenship - utility bill (shows residence - second proof of residence) And the name on your birth certificate matched the name on your Driver's licence matched the name on your utility bill, right? So for YOU it was easy peasy. Now try it, but lacking some of those documents.
I didn't say I didn't need proof but there was no paperwork for me to fill out. I handed clerk my DL and BC and utility bill. Passed eye test and got my renewed DL.
There was no paperwork for you to "fill out" because you already had all the correct forms of documentation you needed. The people complaining about having trouble with the "paperwork" aspects of Read ID (or of proving citizenship to the specifications of the SAVE Act in order to vote) are lacking key documents of evidence. That's the "paperwork" they need to get, and in order to get the paperwork as evidence, they have to often jump through multiple hoops. SO your situation was easy peasy, but some people's situations are not easy peasy.
Like my MAGA friends from childhood who have been divorced and married multiple times, sometimes eloping, and they don't have *any* of the official documents they need to prove who they say they are, besides a driver's license. And they are white, so sometimes they drive around on an expired driver's license for years.
I just spoke with my sister, who was married in NYS in 1987. She can't find her certified copy of her marriage license (hasn't needed it for ages), and ordered a copy 12 weeks ago; it still hasn't arrived.
They told us about this twenty years ago.
What are you talking about? She got her New York State Real ID years ago - when she was supposed to. She thought that was enough. But as I am positive you understand, Real ID in most states doesn't prove you are a citizen because it doesn't state that you were born in the US nor does it say you are a citizen. So how can she prove she is a citizen? (She doesn't have a passport). She needs to show her birth certificate. Great. She has that. OK, stay with me here. Her NYS driver's license (her REAL ID) says MARY JANE DOE. Her birth certificate says MARY JANE SMITH. The birth certificate is proof (MARY JANE SMITH) is a US native born citizen. But how to link her birth certificate to her REAL ID? Her REAL ID has a different name on it. When she goes to register to vote, if the SAVE act passes, she will have to hand over her NYS Real ID with one name and her birth certificate with a different name. And (are you still with me sweetie?) they are going to say "How do I know the birth certificate belongs to you? Only the first two names are the same.": She will say, "Here's my husband, Billy Bob Smith. I took his name when we got married." Then they will ask her to please prove that she married Billy Bob Smith. Get it? She GOT her real id when she was supposed to. She has been registered to vote for FOREVER under her married name. But NOW, if the SAVE Act passes, she will need to go back and get her marriage license again to prove she is a citizen. Up till now, there's been no reason to think she needed to do so. She had her Real Id. She had her Social Security card. She's been working legally since the 1980s as a citizen. But to prove she is a citizen she now needs her marriage license. And it is taking a long time to get it. Do you understand now? This is EXTRA. Beyond just getting Real Id.
