What paperwork? I took my original birth certificate and al utility bill addressed to me at my home address when I renewed my driver's license. Zero problem.
So you had:
- an unexpired driver's license (shows your identity, first proof of residence)
- original birth certificate (certified, embossed, etc) shows citizenship
- utility bill (shows residence - second proof of residence)
And the name on your birth certificate matched the name on your Driver's licence matched the name on your utility bill, right?
So for YOU it was easy peasy.
Now try it, but lacking some of those documents.
I didn't say I didn't need proof but there was no paperwork for me to fill out. I handed clerk my DL and BC and utility bill. Passed eye test and got my renewed DL.
There was no paperwork for you to "fill out" because you already had all the correct forms of documentation you needed.
The people complaining about having trouble with the "paperwork" aspects of Read ID (or of proving citizenship to the specifications of the SAVE Act in order to vote) are lacking key documents of evidence. That's the "paperwork" they need to get, and in order to get the paperwork as evidence, they have to often jump through multiple hoops.
SO your situation was easy peasy, but some people's situations are not easy peasy.
Like my MAGA friends from childhood who have been divorced and married multiple times, sometimes eloping, and they don't have *any* of the official documents they need to prove who they say they are, besides a driver's license. And they are white, so sometimes they drive around on an expired driver's license for years.
I just spoke with my sister, who was married in NYS in 1987. She can't find her certified copy of her marriage license (hasn't needed it for ages), and ordered a copy 12 weeks ago; it still hasn't arrived.
They told us about this twenty years ago.

Her p-rno pose in front of prisoners was particularly gross, especially with her $50,000 Rolex.
Meh. Those inmates are still spanking it to that visage. She’s the hottest woman they’ve ever been next to.

REAL ID was before Trump just sayin.

I don't think Real ID or the SAVE Act requirements solve a problem they purport to solve because I don't believe large numbers of non-citizen immigrants are trying to vote.
But the id system across various states has definitely been piecemeal, and lacking rigor in some places. I don't have a problem with tightening things up across the board.
And the time has come for everyone to have a form of unified, national ID. I don't even think we should let military ID serve for this. EVERYONE should have a national id (passport) that shows US citizenship + the right to vote (if over age 18). It should include place of birth, date of birth, and your parents' names and THEIR places of birth and dates of birth.
And everyone's names on these documents should be their full name as listed on their birth certificate.
One thing this national id does NOT need to have, though, is your gender, race, or even eye and hair color. I think that's ridiculous. We treat male and female citizens the same according to the law. We have no different rules for different races. People change their hair and eye color all the time. These are not needed for identification purposes.
I'm not saying add a third marker for Gender X. Just eliminate all reference to gender. There's no need for it for identification. The photo is your identification.
People change their visual appearance all the time.
