From Stathis Kalyvas, Professor of Government at Oxford, former Guggenheim fellow, not a hysterical guy
There is now total clarity, no matter how unimaginable things might seem. And they amount to this: The U.S. government has been taken over by a clique of extremists who have embarked on a process of regime change in the world's oldest democracy. Trump's statement, "He who saves his country does not violate any Law" is no empty ranting. It is totally consistent with his actions of systematically dismantling the country's institutions, implemented with the assistance of the most powerful technology. Vance's speech in Munich, a city of symbolic significance is there was ever one, is a direct attack on Europe, on freedom, and on democracy. All of which amount to an extraordinary disruption of the international system. I struggle to find a historical parallel and I can think of no less than the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, even Munich in 1938. I have always refrained from invoking such analogies in the past; I always found them excessive. Not now. The arrogance on display is staggering. They think their actions will increase U.S. power, but they are in fact wrecking their own country and, in the process, everyone else. This reminds me a lot of the Iraq invasion, but on a global scale. The timing couldn't be worse. France and Germany are effectively with no government, elites are in disarray, people confused and disoriented. The only hope lies in the sheer enormity of the threat; it might awake us out of our slumber before it is too late.
https://x.com/SKalyvas/status/1891143556430962775
Thank you. It's only because of American exceptionalism and because we think it can't happen to us that people don't see this.
Americans are way too trusting. It’s clear that nobody is coming to save us. The Republicans are fine with a monarchy, the military is fine with a monarchy, everyone’s fine with corruption because they think they can get on it too. I wish everyone would watch The Gilded Age (no hard history reading required!) and tell us if you’re okay with mass corruption, zero safety nets, no workers’ rights, and women and minorities being relegated.
