Kid is six, first year of swim and is the youngest on team by six months. She loved time trials even though she finished 4th, 5th, and 6th in her events. We told her one day she will be a big kid and may win, but that she's racing to do the best she can do. We loved it - we volunteered, cheered loudly, and just the general "buzz." She will get to swim some B meets, and that is enough for us.
No need for the humblebrag, just be proud of your kid! I truly hope you didn’t phrase things this way to her.
Well, we are genX. When she said it was not fair she didn't win, we pointed out, actually, it was fair, and one day she would be older and bigger and may win, but that winning isn't the point. Is that damaging? I tried every year very hard to a get a presidential fitness patch - and got everything except the pull-up. Is that unfair? I don't think so. The point of sports is being part of a team and trying your best.
