Some teams absolutely are a toxic $hitshow-NVSL Div 1 and 2 for example. Most aren't although even the good ones occasionally have insane over the top parents.

She will get to swim some B meets, and that is enough for us.

No need for the humblebrag, just be proud of your kid! I truly hope you didn’t phrase things this way to her.

DP - where did PP say their not proud of their kid? Being proud doesn't mean lying to them. It's great to be proud of effort and do the best you can as an individual. What else should you say to a kid in this situation?

Marveling that their kid managed to have fun “even though she came in 4th or 5th” is sending the message that she didn’t meet her parents expectations. It’s super passive aggressive. If you can’t see that, then I can’t help you.

Oh, please. Did you see the PP’s further response? That her kid complained it wasn’t fair that she didn’t win, and so they were both being realistic in the work it takes to be fast and also to be proud of the effort she put in? It’s actually possible to be proud of your kid *and* realistic about where they are right now. Sounds like PP’s kid had a great day and her parents are appreciating the fun of the experience, regardless of results.

Well, we are genX. When she said it was not fair she didn't win, we pointed out, actually, it was fair, and one day she would be older and bigger and may win, but that winning isn't the point. Is that damaging? I tried every year very hard to a get a presidential fitness patch - and got everything except the pull-up. Is that unfair? I don't think so. The point of sports is being part of a team and trying your best.

If she did freestyle and you're in MCSL as a 4th place finish you'll definitely be swimming freestyle on saturday AMs as each team enters 6 in FR (2 heats instead of 1)

If you are in NVSL, I would suggest holding off on making Sat morning plans. She likely would get put in an A meet. MCSL or other leagues where kids swim 3 strokes probably not.
