DC government employees need to come back to the office. My company and many others in downtown DC started requiring 3-4 days in the office each week in early 2022. We are not paying these employees DC salaries so that they can work from home in Frederick. If they don't like it, then quit. 50% of DC government employees are slackers anyway. We can use those vacancies to hire more energized people.
Here’s the thing, it’s not going to attract more energized workers. The slackers are going to complain and moan but they aren’t going to be able to get hired elsewhere, so they will grudgingly return to the office. The high performers who are still energized and motivated will look to make the jump to the feds, where they will get a COLA and retain hybrid flexibility.
