The whole thing is sad. The guy who was shot attended the same high school my child attends. Of course, no one can tell the future, but their experiences seem so far apart based on the photo of the guy holding a gun. I don't know what can be done to change things.
Step one is to stop the segregation at the middle schools and the high school. I'm tired of hearing UMC parents say "oh my kids never see anything" and ignoring the problems and just focusing on special treatment for their kids. If everyone would be thrown together, change would happen fast. Right now the high school basically has a publicly funded private school in the middle of the high school. That's not equitable.
No. Step one should be to remove problem students from public schools entirely. Their parents failed them. They should not be allowed to hijack classrooms and ruin education for everyone else. We need to bring back expulsion and remedial schools for dificult students. More segregation, not less. Get rid of the kids who are making things hell for students and teachers.
I agree with you but that isn't fashionable in education circles. It's all about restorative justice where victims have to sit in a room with their attackers and talk about being attacked. I'm tired of a variety of people benefitting off of the state of Alexandria schools. From the UMC parents who ensure their kids get a leg up on college admissions by coming from an urban school to other enthusiastic supporters of Wilson, Council, ACPS and school board who have businesses as tutors to the UMC kids. It's in their interest to keep the status quo. Disgusting.
