Yale is the only school in that first group that wouldn't just be a Northwestern peer.
Duke is overrated on DCUM despite the fake hatred. After a decade on the west coast, I view Duke differently now (and don't hold it in the same regard). It as a great non-Ivy private school with good sports name recognition along the lines of NW and Georgetown. Duke and NW are clearly not seen as close to that HYPS group nationally and internationally. Because both have Power 5 athletic departments and strong grad schools (they are also peers in many grad school disciplines, though NW's B-school is a differentiator), Duke and NW are probably best viewed as places that strive to be Stanford peers but that are far closer to one another.

It is a great school, full stop.

Realistically for undergrad, it's UPenn, Duke, Columbia, Yale > UChicago, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins > Cornell, Vanderbilt
Yale > Columbia, Wharton > rest of Penn, Chicago, Northwestern, Duke > JHU, Cornell > Vanderbilt
Yale is not a step ahead of the rest anymore. They missed out on major STEM developments that HPSM all were central to, especially in CS. You see kids taking their state school for CS over Yale at a higher rate now. Columbia also isn't necessarily better than the rest because their US News and admissions scandal will probably hurt them a bit because going down to 18 will make a lot of HS kids looking at US News for the first time think Columbia is barely a T20. Of course in reality it's a great school but it's no better than UPenn, Yale, or Duke.

The Duke booster is so persistent!
LOL ! And he/she even misspells Dook !
As a third party DMV grad it’s always funny to see people on here mix their dislike for Duke athletics with Duke as an academic institution. Yes, they beat my team like many of yours in lacrosse, basketball, etc. most years, but I don’t let that affect my understanding of Duke as a top academic destination. But DCUM will DCUM and continue to hate. Same goes for a number of schools that DCUM seems to particularly enjoy picking on
+1 always funny to see the Duke haters on here but once you've been on dcum for a while you already know the landscape.
