I am surprised at the higher admit rate than a number of other schools. University of Richmond has essentially the same admit rate. Schools like Colgate, Vassar and Lehigh have lower admit rates. https://www.collegekickstart.com/blog/item/class-of-2023-admission-results
UVA’s applicants are very self-selected v. those privates. Your public high school counselor won’t support your app to UVA if they know you don’t have a shot.
Not my experience. My kids' HS counselor did not offer any opinion on their list. DS applied UVA and I could see from Naviance and knowing he didn't have the "most rigorous" schedule that there was no way he was getting in. But, I wasn't going to tell him not to (he didn't apply to many schools so I didn't have an issue with the added app fee). No surprise, he didn't get in. I don't know where this myth of "won't support your app" comes from.
I think it depends on your counselor. My Kids HS counselor was very realistic about where they might have a shot and where they don't. UVA is pretty clear instate in terms of what it takes, and most kids are not going to waste their time on all the supplemental essays if they are not within shooting range of the stats needed. One of my DD's friends applied ED and she really had no chance, but she at least had a 4.0+ GPA. Kids who are under a 4.0 know they have no shot and are not going to bother. Just like my kid didn't other to apply to Harvard. Not sure why that is hard to grasp.
