That’s with ED. Even with ED yield protection, which is exactly what it’s used for, UVA has a mediocre yield rate. There simply are better options for OOS students in many cases.
55 Rhodes Scholars. Top public producer after West Point. I strongly disagree with your position. Great value. Great school. Got my kid into a top grad school. But YRMV.
In 120 years of Rhodes Scholarships, UVA has produced on average less than .5 “winners” per year. Niche awards like these that are given out to so few, as prestigious as they are, isn’t that much of a bragging point when one looks at it more closely. I’d rather see boasting about the STEM offerings at a top public that serve thousands of students each year. Unfortunately UVA boosters aren’t able to do that.
.5 winners a year when there are only 32 awarded each year is pretty damned impressive

UVA’s applicants are very self-selected v. those privates. Your public high school counselor won’t support your app to UVA if they know you don’t have a shot.
Not my experience. My kids' HS counselor did not offer any opinion on their list. DS applied UVA and I could see from Naviance and knowing he didn't have the "most rigorous" schedule that there was no way he was getting in. But, I wasn't going to tell him not to (he didn't apply to many schools so I didn't have an issue with the added app fee). No surprise, he didn't get in. I don't know where this myth of "won't support your app" comes from.

Just glad another school thought 3.98/4.5, 1560 was sufficient for admission. Just had to cross the Potomac...Go Terps!
Easy choice for Engineering. Just sorry you have to pay OOS rates.
Thank you. Fortunately received some merit so only a couple thousand more as an OOS than in state UVA. BTW, CS major, so CMNS at UMD.
Great to hear. Far better choice than UVA for CS.
I think you need to be better educated about what UVA offers (engineering) for CS: https://engineering.virginia.edu/departments/computer-science. There's also a computer science degree offered throught eh College of Arts & Sciences so there are two ways to do it, which complements those trying to do majors and minors.
You don’t seem to get the point that Maryland is a superior CS program — guess that wasn’t part of your education.
I don't get that point either.

No The Computer Science major in UVA's engineering school is ranked no. 10 in the nation. https://engineering.virginia.edu/news/2021/02/uva-engineering-recognized-among-top-schools-multiple-rankings#:~:text=The%20University%20of%20Virginia%20School%20of%20Engineering%20was,Virginia%20school%20on%20the%20list%20of%20top-25%20programs.
