I have a kid at a college in another state that didn't require the vaccine for anyone attending. They do require masks inside of campus buildings except when eating/drinking. Anyway, I was worried about it and really stressed over sending him (haha, I know, I couldn't really prevent him, but you know, a mother's stress), but it was his first semester of college and he was beyond excited to start the next phase of his life. He basically told me, "listen, I'm vaccinated and I always wear a mask. Trust me to make good decisions." It was hard but I did. I stopped stressing and worrying so much. So far, so good. I check the campus dashboard numbers from time to time and they aren't bad. I just checked today (yesterday's numbers): Son's school: Active cases: 107 New positive: 17 Undergrads: 21,000 Comparing with UVA who has a vaccine mandate right now: Active cases: 376 New cases: 51 Undergrads: 18,000 My son says he doesn't have any direct friends who are not vaccinated. He knows of some people who aren't but he just operates under the assumption that when encountering a new person, they aren't vaccinated until he finds out otherwise.
You do understand that Omicron surge is at different points in different parts of the country, right?
I’m not the pp you quoted, but I’m another pp who also has students at a school that does not require the vaccine. I’ve been following my kids’ college and UVA since August, and it’s consistently been like this (similar or lower Covid numbers.)
DP. To pp’s point, your anecdote is meaningless if you don’t name the other school because there are a whole host of reasons why schools might see differences that don’t somehow come down to vaccine mandates = more covid (which seems to be your contention?).
He goes to WVU. No, I don't believe that vaccine mandates = more covid at all. I was simply offering some reassurance that hey, I have a kid who has been at college since August w/o a mandate and their numbers are on par with UVA's, which has the mandate. Would I like for WVU to have the mandate? Yes!! Do I think my kid is avoiding parties or wearing a mask while doing those activities? Of course not. Even though there's no mandate, the school says 80% of the campus is vaccinated. Wasn't 70 or 75% the magic herd immunity number we kept hearing over the summer? If so, maybe it's herd immunity at play.
A better comparison might be Liberty University. Look at the cumulative total of the last 10 days: https://www.liberty.edu/coronavirus/covid-19-dashboard/
Fewer than UVA! Great info!
