The guy in the video was probably a "time-out" parent in the teenager's youth and is switching tactics. IME, children who were spanked appropriately in their younger years are respectful of their parents as they aged, so the need to spank teenagers would be rare indeed. I'm really having a hard time with people like you.  You really think that the only way kids behave as they age is to get spanked (and with a belt!) as a child???  God, this is wrong on so many different levels I don't even know what to say.  But please, children don't need to feel pain in order to behave.  They simply don't.  They don't even need the threat of pain to behave.

Spanking (and certainly with a belt) is such an "easy way out" for parenting.  As a parent, you don't actually have to invest much time/energy into it.  You hurt your child and your child learns to fear you so they do as you say.  There are ways to raise respectful, behaving kids without this kind of violence and fear.  These ways just take longer and require more consistency.  Time outs do in fact work - but often times, at first, you need to keep returning your child to the place of the time out over and over and over.  And...there is always such a thing as positive reinforcement.  It does work.[/quote]
