This is actually quite insightful; thanks. See, for people like yourself, beating your child til they bleed is a-ok, but using a cuss-word to condemn it is out-of-bounds.

The father said, "I'll beat you into submission." That's exactly what corporal punishment does. There's no lesson there. It's just one person with all the power using violence to control a weaker human being. It's disgusting. And if you do this to your own child, you're a complete failure as a parent.

I go back and forth re how I feel about spanking. Honestly, I think it's each parent's job to discipline how they see fit. Doesn't mean I don't find the video shocking and simply sad. Mostly, I wonder where I will be as a parent when my kid is 7. I really just cannot imagine being a person who had the capacity to discipline my child like that. I think that's what I find most disturbing. But, I guess that's easy to say for me since I'm parenting a 3 y/o at the moment.

I am not one who thinks that the beating in the video is in any way justified, however emotional / verbal abuse can be extremely damaging as well. Many deep wounds and scars are not physical in nature.

I don't disagree with that. But it isn't emotionally abusive to say "F" in and of itself. It is only abusive if it is directed at a person, as some string of profanity or something. That was the only point I was trying to make...

SOmething a little more serious and this guy wouldve killed her

bad parents that are socially awkward and were raised this way beat their children. She's a human being not some animal. You scold her, you take stuff away from her and maybe one spank for her to feel what it tastes like. He hit her multiple times while verbally abusing her. You guys that approve of this probably had it happen to you and you're just as screwed up as this dude that believes an eye for an eye is a smart idea. This guy should be laid over the bed and hit by someone twice his size and strength like this girl was and lets see how he reacts afterwards.

The guy in the video was probably a "time-out" parent in the teenager's youth and is switching tactics. IME, children who were spanked appropriately in their younger years are respectful of their parents as they aged, so the need to spank teenagers would be rare indeed. They don't even need the threat of pain to behave.

Spanking (and certainly with a belt) is such an "easy way out" for parenting. As a parent, you don't actually have to invest much time/energy into it. You hurt your child and your child learns to fear you so they do as you say. There are ways to raise respectful, behaving kids without this kind of violence and fear. These ways just take longer and require more consistency. Time outs do in fact work - but often times, at first, you need to keep returning your child to the place of the time out over and over and over. And...there is always such a thing as positive reinforcement. It does work.

One of the reasons why ALL corporal punishment should be banned. It's disgusting. Anyone who find this crap "okay" are messed up in the head.

Yep, treat others as you'd like to be treated yourself. It's a pretty basic golden rule.
