our kid was recommended for an enrichment program by a teacher who also suggested that we follow up with the principal if we wanted her in- if you don't advocate for your kid and other parents do, your kid loses out. Welcome to modern public education.  [/quote]

I posted the Karen comment, sounded facetious but I was being serious.  It only work if you're white.  Some immigrant kids' parents may not even speak English well enough to advocate.  When minorities do advocate, they are often considered difficult, whiny, what-have-you.  When white people do it, it's advocating.  Obviously there are exceptions here and there because there are a smattering of genuinely good people in decision-making positions.  Infuriating, but you're right, it is modern public education. I am PP and I am white. I am not a Karen, nor do I ever want to be. However,  I feel very sorry for my child who seems to be stagnating because he didn’t meet some arbitrary criteria to be accepted into enrichment. His pediatrician called him brilliant, all of his teachers have remarked on his intelligence, but no enrichment for him? I never talk about DC’s intelligence to anyone except family. I fee sorry for him and it’s now my job to pay for extra stimulating activities because I refuse to beg the school to place him into enrichment.[/quote]
