our kid was recommended for an enrichment program by a teacher who also suggested that we follow up with the principal if we wanted her in- if you don't advocate for your kid and other parents do, your kid loses out. Welcome to modern public education.  [/quote]

I posted the Karen comment, sounded facetious but I was being serious.  It only work if you're white.  Some immigrant kids' parents may not even speak English well enough to advocate.  When minorities do advocate, they are often considered difficult, whiny, what-have-you.  When white people do it, it's advocating.  Obviously there are exceptions here and there because there are a smattering of genuinely good people in decision-making positions.  Infuriating, but you're right, it is modern public education. No one likes advocating parents. Administrators don’t like accusations of racism either- I’d think AA parents would have a pretty easy time pushing for programs[/quote]
