When my brother was a freshman in high school, he got has girl friend pregnant. [She was a junior.] She had an abortion and there was a lot of family stress. My parents were not the type to leave a box of condoms available - nor have real talks. There was only 1 talk - not until marriage. I know Burke is progressive - but as a homework assignment the students are required to buy a box of condoms and bring them to the teacher with the receipt. The discussion is - if you are not ready to buy condoms, you are not ready to have sex.
Wow. I have mixed feelings about this, if it's true. On the one hand, awesome. On the other, as a late bloomer who waited until a committed relationship because I wanted to be ready to discuss the full implications of sex with my partner, including preventing pregnancy, I feel like this would have pushed my timeline earlier. After seeing how easy it would be to buy protection, there would be one less barrier to move forward with a fling at a party or whatever like it was no big deal. Emotionally, it still felt like a very big deal in high school, and this assignment almost lessens that my opinion.
