Trump's demagogue appeals to the fears and prejudices of his base have made it worse. Previously establishment Republicans were protected because the party money and the major Republican interest groups would always back them against a populist challenger, but now a lot of the major interest groups also, have been taken over by the lunatic fringe, so establishment Republicans can't count on their support.
