The answer to the original question asked is really player-specific. For example, does your DD react better to a coach who is more critical/vocal in their instructions or does she react better to a more "positive" coaching approach? How a parent rates a particular coach will most certainly be influenced by how their child was treated by, and reacted to, the coach, so a coach may be rated highly by one family but despised by another. Indeed, in this thread, there's a coach named that my DD played for that I would advise parents to avoid at all costs, but then, YMMV.
 Very true. We have friends at Rush, which OP mentioned is one of the teams they are looking at. One of the parents loves the 06 coach, while another said: "Forget letting him coach my daughter. I wouldn't let him coach Osama Bin Laden's daughter." As you said, your mileage may vary.
Exactly. Which is why the original question is more of a quagmire. Walk up and down the same sideline and ask the parents about the coach and you will get a range of answers. And all of the answers are generally dependent upon a few factors: 1. The players role 2. Playing time 3. Perceived treatment relative to other players 4. Overall team performance People will weigh any of the above through their own lens and will often see things very differently. Some coaches are more polarizing than others and some may have more of a following than others. Some coaches are simply despised by all and that is often pretty universal but they usually don't last very long. And through it all, just like coaches will make mistakes about kids so will we about them. Sometimes it just works out and is great and sometimes it can be a disaster no matter how many kudos and recommendations you heard. You have to be ok with making a mistake. When push comes to shove just let your kid decide. She may love the kids but hate the coach or vice versa. But she is the one who has to engage with the coach. Help her frame questions and engage the coach directly to get a feel for how well she can work with him/her. All coaches know how to tell YOU what you want to hear but it is harder to look a kid in the eye and lie to them.
Amen to that! I was one of those who thought this entire thread was a waste of time / trolling, but that may be the best thing I've ever read on this board.
