As for the person who posted the photo of the intersection, thank you, and WOW you need to get a life. This is exactly what people have been talking about when they say there are many many people with mental illness. Obsessing to the point that you seek out the photo online is a sick thing to be doing PP. You are a sad group of people obsessing about an incident with a 16 year old driver and defending the aggressive driver. Why? I imagine you are all the asshole drivers we all encounter on a daily basis, and you feel the need to defend your own road rage incidents.
Wow - I'm the asshole? I was genuinely interested in your post from the very beginning, since I couldn't picture the road configuration you were describing. I really don't think I've ever seen two lanes just turn into one like you described, and the Australian diagram you posted was helpful, but again, I've never seen that in real life on any local roads. I also have teenage drivers, so I'm also very interested and keenly aware of driver behavior - good and bad. When you described the location, I was even more interested, since I drive that route everyday. Your description of the road configuration was just plain wrong, and in my experience, that is not a common "zipper" location. Most drivers seem to be aware even before the light that the right lane does not continue, and most favor the left lane well in advance. That is what I teach my teenage drivers - be aware of tricky road conditions in areas where you drive and position your vehicle in the safest way possible to avoid the need to make last minute tricky maneuvers. You were teaching the opposite behavior. Frankly, it is also a little disturbing that you described driving in this area frequently and "never noticed that sign." Wow.
