Most of them received at least a 20% increase in 2013 and they want more... retroactively based on the increased salary scale. I support teachers, I don't support greed. The lack of a contract is about greed.
We get paid and have that money over 12 months. I don't get any extra money. After taxes and benefits it barely pays the mortgage, which is why I tutor. I also don't work at a school that gets the big bonuses. I don't want a bonus. I don't even want a huge raise I just need a cost-of-living adjustment so I can keep a roof over my head.

DCPS teachers are paid far above charter, private, or any of the counties around here. That doesn't mean a raise wouldn't be deserved or appreciated.

After taxes, insurance, and the mandatory summer pay withdrawal, my net pay is $1,242.05 bi-weekly. My child's before/after care is $400 a month. My monthly student loan payment is $600. My rent and utilities for a one bedroom apartment come out to $1700 a month. Car insurance is $70 a month and I have a cheap $50 cell phone plan. No cable. No car note. I'm broke before I even get to the grocery store or gas station. I'd work a part time job if I had access to free childcare in the evenings. I just got a hardship forbearance on my student loans so that frees up enough cash to buy groceries.
