According to Montgomery County police spokeswoman Rebecca Innocenti, they "will determine what charges, IF ANY, " should be brought against drunk driver Sam Ellis. (Caps are mine.) Does this mean they might let him stay a free man?? I must be missing something here...
Here is the whole article. I assume that it means exactly what it says. [i]Police Near Completion of Investigation into Deadly North Potomac Collision Police say they will soon confer with the State’s Attorney’s Office about filing charges in the case By Andrew Metcalf More than two months after two Wootton High School graduates were killed in a single-vehicle collision in North Potomac, police are wrapping up their investigation. Police plan to meet later this month or early next month with prosecutors in the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine what charges, if any, should be filed, according to police spokeswoman Rebecca Innocenti. Calvin Li, 18, and Alexander Murk, 18, were killed in the June 25 collision. The driver, Samuel Ellis, 18, suffered serious injuries in the collision, but survived. A 17-year-old front passenger, who was not identified by police, also survived with minor injuries. After the collision, police said alcohol and speed may have played a role in the collision. Police said the young men were coming from an underage drinking party in North Potomac before the collision and that alcohol was found in the vehicle. Innocenti said Friday that police will also be discussing with prosecutors whether charges should be brought in relation to the party. She also said any information about the role alcohol may have played in the collision will be released after detectives meet with prosecutors. Police Captain Tom Didone said at a press conference the day after the collision that the car driven by Ellis was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree and fence on Dunfief Mill Road. The vehicle came to rest upside down in the driveway of a residence. Police said Li and Murk were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. Ellis, who graduated from Wootton in 2015, was the starting quarterback for the school’s football team. In an unrelated, but similar case, an 18-year-old from Brookeville, Austin Hall, was sentenced to an 18-month jail term Thursday after he pleaded guilty in July to vehicular manslaughter as the driver in a collision that killed a 15-year-old Sherwood High School student on Labor Day weekend in 2014. In that case, Hall reportedly lost control while driving 119 mph on a road in Olney with a 35 mph speed limit and hit a tree and light pole, according to The Washington Post. Shawn Gangloff, 15, was killed in the collision, which happened after the boys left an underage drinking party less than a mile away, according to the report.
