The modern odds of any US servicemember being killed in action are incredibly low. No one signs up for the military with the expectation that he has a good chance of dying. The odds are incredibly low.
That's true, but it is not true of special forces such as green berets.
He wasn't a green beret...
Group Support Command. Would it have been 3rd GSC? He was a mechanic and was probably a driver for the team that day. But that's just an assumption on my part.
I'm aware of that he was not green beret. But he was taking part in a green beret operation. I guess one must be very explicit when posting here.
But did he sign up to take part in a green beret operation? Did he really know what he was getting himself into?
Absolutely. The military does not spring special forces operations on unsuspecting troops.
Well they kind of do. Anyone can be assigned to the support command if they need that MOS. The Army just puts you where they need you. My spouse was in a GSC Signal detachment and had no idea what the unit even was until he looked it up. He loved it and enjoyed his time there, but he that was just where he PCSed to.
That's a completely different situation. That was not a special forces operation.
He wasn't special forces though. He was a mechanic, attached to a team, probably driving for them. They weren't expecting any "trouble", that's why the slow response. He wasn't out there on some covert mission.
For the upteenth time, we know he wasn't special forces. But the mission probably was covert. We don't know what his role was.
