Anyone who can just completely ignore the mounting evidence that covid infections themselves, even when they don't kill you outright, even mild infections, can actually wreak havoc on your immune system, brain, internal organs, and who knows what else is just sticking their head in the sand and singing a happy tune to themselves. It's everyone for themselves, and for some people that means unstrap all the safety equipment, point the car at the rock, and floor the gas. The government is allowing you to do that, so feel free. Just don't be all "I wish I had ..." or "Nobody told me ..." if you win one of the sad prizes in the covid lottery.
Here's what I don't understand though. Sure, people might be one of the unlucky ones and get long covid and long-term problems. I agree. But avoiding covid at all costs has a known 100 percent negative outcome. Avoiding unmasked indoor gatherings and having your children mask for the rest of their childhoods have known 100 percent negative costs to mental health, quality of life, and normal childhood development. And if your response is oh we do gather indoors, then what are you going on about anyway? Or oh they won't have to mask forever, they just need to keep masking for now. Covid is here to stay so if your plan is make sure you never get it, your kids will need to mask for years to come.
I mean, imagine giving that speech to the people of London in Summer 1854 before physician John Snow told the city to shut down that one pump that was infecting everyone, because what's the sense of taking any precautions when cholera can't be stopped and will always be with us? Scientists are working on vaccines that don't just stop deaths but also stop infections. They are working on better medicines to use when people get infected and on medicines for long covid symptoms. Just because I take a position on safety now doesn't mean I have to replicate that position for the rest of my life. But I can easily judge the risk of covid -- and all the attached unknowns -- as too great for my family right now and act appropriately. You guys seem to think you understand all the risks and they're no more than the flu, which is a ridiculous position really -- instead of truly understanding the risks you're just denying their existence. That's how my daughter used to behave when she didn't want to go to bed. I don't know what you're talking about, 100% known negative outcome. We are living just fine. My kids are in school with masks. I'm at work several days a week in a mask and with a HEPA filter I brought from home. We get take out, and now that the weather's nicer we will go to restaurants and eat outside, like we did last year. I'll visit with family over the summer (not sure if we'll eat indoors then or not). This isn't quite normal life but we're not so deprived that it feels like some terrible war or something.
So you're waiting for eradication of covid via vaccines and treatments for long covid. Good luck. If you believe the kind of life your living isn't impacting or won't negatively impact your kids in the long-term, then that's what you believe. I don't agree with you. I don't know how old your kids are, but they want to hang out at each other's houses. They want to have sleepovers. They want to go places together (and yes, some of them are inside) and socialize. I don't know if your family travels, but it's a big priority for my family as are family friend get togethers with people my kids have known their whole lives. You're not going to get any of this time back with them or for them.
