It is clear, from the posters here and from the statements from the Democrats, that they really have no reasonable argument against a wall. It is all about #resistance and ensuring that Trump is unable to fulfill a promise he made to the American people... Dems: "Walls don't work." <They are shown evidence of how successful the wall has been not only in our country, but also other countries> Dems: "We need other solutions - technology and people." <They are shown evidence of where Trump has stated he would include other solutions> Dems: "You can't place a wall along the entire border." <They are shown evidence of where Trump has stated that there will be places where a wall won't be built> Dems: "It's too much money." <"It is less than 1/2 of 1% of the federal budget"> Dems: "You haven't spent all the money already allocated." <"Neither have many of the agencies allocated money. If that is your criteria for spending, we can talk about some of the social programs you want to fund.> Dems: "Why have you chosen this hill to die on?" Nice try, folks. Your strategy is so damned transparent.
Walls don't work. Ask Reagan. Look at the stats. And if you campaign on building a wall that Mexico is going to pay for, then follow through on that promise. I don't think, if Trump had run on a platform of "We are going to spend $30B on a Wall" that conservatives would have supported that. And ultimately, Trump had control of the House, Senate and White House for the past 2 years and didn't do diddly squat on his wall. In another week, he will have lost his chance. Why didn't the GOP support him when he had the chance? Why didn't he take the $25B when the democrats offered it?
60 votes in the Senate.
Simple majority if they wanted.
Nope. Not wise for the future. Harry Reid learned that the hard way.
Dems are also taking the long view about what's best for all concerned (i.e., the country) by holding Trump to the fire right now. And the irony is, the hoist is by his own petard -- he set this up, said he could get someone else to pay for it, then said he could find the money elsewhere without the Dems, then said he was "proud" to shut down the government OVER THIs, and he would take full responsibility. Okay. There it is. And he is melting down all over the place, just in time to be held further accountable when Dems (and subpoena power for additional information) come into charge of the House, and when it sounds like the Mueller report is coming due fairly soon. He is unfit. He does not need to be emboldened. If the GOP disagrees, they have an option to stop this shutdown (and his panicky rages) right now -- nuclear option. But I think they want to cede responsibility for what has to happen to the Dems, not take responsibility for stopping it.
