Because groceries and eggs were expensive. Most voters thought the economy was doing much worse than it actually was.

Historically, Democrats have had to clean up the messes left by their predecessors. Clinton got the debt-to-GDP ratio down from 62 to 54 percent. Obama stabilized it again after W’s massive tax cuts and wars added another $5 trillion to the debt.  Trump left office after his first term with a 105 percent ratio.  Most recessions start under Republican presidents.

It’s a pattern.  Maybe next year Dems can tell everyone they’re going to bring the troops home from Canada, Greenland, and Panama and end all the expensive wars.
