Description:  Based on staff interviews, a staff member did not follow the program's positive guidance policy as stated in the parent handbook. Evidence: KinderCare's positive guidance policy states that staff are trained to use various techniques including redirection, praise and distraction to redirect children. "We take a proactive and preventive approach to guidance that reinforces appropriate behaviors rather than focusing on inappropriate behaviors." It was reported to Licensing that staff member #1 grabbed a child by the hand, forced him to hit himself in the face and stated "You don't like the way that feels do you?" The staff member acknowledged to the Director that "That is true. I did do that" By forcing the child to hit himself, the staff member is not using positive guidance as required by the program policy to redirect the child.

Action to be Taken:  All staff will be retrained in "Positive Child Guidance" by February 1, 2016.

Description:  Based on staff statements, a staff member failed to promote social well being and interacted with a child with a forbidden action. Evidence: On 10/29/2015 Staff member #1 forced a child to hit himself with his own hand in the face. The staff member admitted to using this form of discipline with the child. KinderCare's employee handbook states that unacceptable discipline methods include "spanking, grabbing, pinching or physical punishment..."

Action to be Taken:  That staff member has been managed.
